Birth Karens

Free hospital birth advocates

We are a volunteer group of birth justice allies. We recognize the inequity in birth outcomes is largely
influenced by discrimination in the hospital setting. Black birthing people in New York are 8 times more
likely to die of pregnancy related causes than White birthing people. This is unacceptable, and we will not
allow this to continue in our city.
We believe the color of a person’s skin should never be the cause of
death, injury, or illness.

If you are in a hospital in an obstetric unit in a Manhattan hospital, and are experiencing discrimination,
call us. We will send a Karen to your bedside. Your Karen will make sure you are being listened to. We will
march our privilege into the hallway, and demand you get fair treatment. We can throw a white-girl
tantrum and call the managers. We will do whatever it takes to make sure you are heard.

Hospital discrimination has nothing to do with socio-economic status or level of education. Even Serena
Williams was ignored during her birth. It's not you. It's the system. It's racism. But you know who hospital
staff listen to? White people. That’s fucked up. Until hospital discrimination ends, we will be your
advocates. We will make sure doctors and hospital staff listen to your concerns, and take action. We will
stand with you.

If you are pregnant, save our number, and share it with your birth partner. There will be no contract or
payment. We will be there for you because the lives of Black mothers’ matter, and the lives of Black
infants’ matter. We will advocate for equity, for your health, and the health of your infant.

If you feel you may be experiencing health-care discrimination, you likely are. Here are some examples of hospital discrimination:

  • You feel you are not being listened to or taken seriously
  • You express a health concern that is dismissed
  • Your request for pain medication is refused or delayed
  • You are not offered a lactation consultant within the first 24 hours following delivery
  • Your infant is given formula without your request
  • You are the victim of micro aggressions from hospital staff or medical professionals
  • You or your partner are not treated with respect or courtesy
  • You are or have been pressured toward unnecessary interventions to speed up labor
